Planning Overview---------
GATHER ideas. Look at kitchens in magazines and in the homes of your friends neighbors. Visit "open houses," model homes and retail stores in your area.
CHOOSE your materials. Make your selection from the materials on pages 6-10.
MEASURE and make a sketch. Record your countertop measurements and sketch your ideas following the directions on pages 5 and 11.
COMPLETE your personal countertop planner. Then take it to your nearest retailer.
PREPARE for a great looking countertop. After you have all materials on-site, schedule the installation. Prior to the installation:
-Remove all loose items such as dishes, pictures, and rugs.
-Seal off adjacent rooms with sheets or drop cloths to keep dust out.
-Make plans to keep children and pets away from the construction area until installation is complete.
-Designate a trash collection area for the installers, let them know beforehand if you want to keep and discarded materials.
-Set rules for the work crew. Let them know where to park, what door to enter, what restroom to use, where to use the phone, etc.
-Check with your installer, if the kitchen will be out of service for a few days, you may want to set up a temporary food preparation area in another room.
-Let neighbors know of the work in advance, so they're not surprised by the activity.
