Instructions for staining and finishing

Instructions for staining &
     finishing doors --

        WOOD

    Step 1. Materials Needed:

To stain a wood door, you will need: Wood Kote Jel'd
Stain, a Wood Kote clear finish (see STEP 4 below), a
lint free cloth, a tack cloth, mineral spirits, rubber
gloves, masking tape. 150 grit sandpaper (rough sur-
faces), 220 grit sandpaper (final sanding) and a 2 inch
bristle brush.

    Step 2. Surface Preparation:

    1) Remove the door from its frame and lay horizontally

on saw horses or a table. 2) Remove all hardware and
mask off anything you don't want stained. 3) Sand the
surface to the desired smoothness. 4) Wipe the door
with a tack cloth to clean any dust or residue from the
surface.

Step 3. Stain Application:

1) Stain one panel at a time (refer to the door staining
diagram). Using  a corner of a folded cloth, apply the
stain in a circular motion. Begin in the center of the
panel and work to the edges. 2) With a clean corner of
the cloth, remove excess stain by wiping in the direction
of the grain. 3) Brush out stain built up in the panel
corners. 4) After staining all the panels, next stain the
inside stiles. 5) Apply stain in a circular motion and
apply stain to the rails in a similar fashion. 7) If only
the exterior face of the door is to be stained, stain the
hinged edge of the door. If both sides of the door are to
be stained, stain both edges. 8) Finally, stain the out-
side stiles. 9) Allow stain to dry for two hours before
staining the other side of the door. If desired, stain the
door frame and trim to match. Use mineral spirits to
clean the brush for later application of a protective top
coat (see STEP 4). 10) Before applying a top coat,
allow the stain to dry for at least two hours.

    Step 4. Protective Top Coat:

For exterior doors, use Wood Kote Flagship UV

polyurethane as described in STEP 4 for FIBERGLASS
doors. For interior doors, you may choose from Ultra
Poly Kote (durable, easy to clean), Cascade Poly
Kote (low odor, soap and water clean up), or Crystal
Kote Lacquer (quick dry & easy touch up). Apply two
or three coats of finish, following the directions on the
product label. Be sure to coat the bottom of the door.

FIBERGLASS

    Step 1. Materials Needed:

To stain an exterior fiberglass door, you will need Wood
Kote Jel'd Stain, Wood Kote Flagship UV
polyurethane, a lint free cloth, mineral spirits, rubber
gloves, masking tape and a 2 inch bristle brush.

    Step 2. Surface Preparation:

    1) Remove the door from its frame and lay horizontally

on saw horses or a table. 2) Remove all hardware and
mask off anything you don't want stained. DO NOT
SAND FIBERGLASS. 3) Wipe the door with mineral
spirits to clean any dust or residue from the surface.
Allow all mineral spirits to dry from the surface before
applying stain.

Step 3. Stain Application:

1) Stain one panel at a time (refer to the door staining
diagram). Using a corner of a folded cloth apply the
stain in a circular motion. Begin in the center of the
panel and work to the edges. 2) With a clean corner of
the cloth, remove excess stain by lightly wiping in the
direction of the grain. 3) Brush out stain built up in the
panel corners. Lightly bursh in the direction of the grain
to remove swirl marks. 4) After staining all the panels,
next stain the inside stiles. 5) Apply stain in a circular
motion and wipe the excess in the direction of the grain.
6) Then apply stain to the rails in a similar fashion. 7)
If only the exterior face of the door is to be stained,
stain the hinged edge of the door. If both sides of the
door are to be stained, stain both edges. 8) Finally,
stain the outside stiles. 9) Allow stain to dry for two
hours, then repeat the process on the other side of the
door. If desired, stain the door frame and trim to match.
Use mineral spirits to clean the brush for later applica-
tion of a protective top coat (see STEP 4). 10) Before
applying a top coat, allow the stain to dry for at least
two hours.

    Step 4. Protective Top Coat:

Apply Flagship UV polyurethane as a protective top

coat. Flagship UV has ultra violet inhibitors which will
protect the stain and door from the elements. For interi-
or doors, refer to STEP 4 for WOOD doors. Apply two
product label. For best results, use an aerosol can of
Flagship UV for the first coat of finish. Subsequent
coats should be applied with a brush.

METAL

    Step 1. Materials Needed:

To finish an exterior metal door that does not have grain
embossing, you will need Wood Kote Jel'd Stain, Wood
Kote Flagship UV polyurethane, a graining tool (avail-
able at paint and hardware stores), rubber gloves, a 2
inch bristle brush, masking tape and a lint free cloth.

    Step 2. Surface Preparation:

    1) Remove the door from its frame and lay horizontally
on saw horses or a table. 2) Remove all hardware and
mask off anything you don't want stained. DO NOT
SAND METAL DOORS. 3) Wipe the door with mineral
spirits to clean any dust or residue from the surface.
Allow all mineral spirits to dry from the wood before
applying stain. 4) If the door is not primed, apply a
primer according to the door manufacturers recommen-
dations. Allow the primer to dry before applying the
stain.

Step 3. Stain Application:

1) For best results, practive using a graining tool on
cardboard before using the stain on a metal door. 2) If
the door has a grain embossed, follow the FIBER-
GLASS instructions. With un-embossed doors, apply a
base coat of stain with the corner of a folded cloth,
working small parts at a time. Start with the inside of
the door and work out toward the edges. 3) Lightly
brush in the direction of the grain to remove excess
stain and swirl marks. 4) After staining the entire door,
let it dry for at least twelve hours. 5) Apply a second
coat of stain in the same manner. While the stain is still
wet, create a wood grain look by using the graining tool.
Rock the graining tool back and forth while pulling it
down the metal door. Use a bristle brush to give the
panel edges a grain look. 6) If only the exterior face of
the door is to be stained, stain the hinged edge of the
door. If both sides of the door are to be stained, stain
both edges. 7) Allow stain to dry for two hours, then
repeat the process on the other side of the door. If
desired, stain the door frame and trim to match using
the same technique. Use mineral spirits to clean the
brush for later application of a protective top coat (see
STEP 4). 8) Before applying a top coat, allow the stain
to dry for at least two hours.

    Step 4. Protective Top Coat:

Apply Flagship UV polyurethane as a protective top
coat. Refer to STEP 4 in the FIBERGLASS section for
application procedures.
